Brock Schreiber is a devoted husband and father from the People of the Waters that are Never Still. Brock seized the chance a few years ago to learn the Mahican language and became a community teacher. Committed to preserving his heritage, he innovatively seeks ways to engage and inspire new language learners, ensuring the cultural legacy endures. Dedicated to guiding future Mahican speakers, Brock actively contributes to ongoing language revitalization efforts, weaving the language back into daily life.
Kanaysa Heath was born on Menominee land to a Mohican mother and a Menominee father. Raised on the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican reservation with very little knowledge of Mohican and Menominee languages, Kanaysa considers Indigenous languages to be of critical importance. Post-pandemic communication changes allowed Kanaysa to join the effort of revitalizing the once-dormant Mohican language. Kanaysa is dedicated to learning, teaching, speaking and normalizing Mã’eekaneeweexthowãakan. Kanaysa believes learning, normalizing and speaking our languages will heal us and our communities.
Maxkweennow Madden
Chris Harvey has been the Mohican-language linguist for the Stockbrigde-Munsee Nation since 2018. He is working with the community to revitalize a spoken language, drawing from written documentation and the memories of elders. He has many years of experience with Algonquian languages and linguistics dating back to 1995, and is honoured to put that knowledge to use in helping bring the language back. Chris is the linguistics advisor for Speak Mahican. When not practicing Mã’eekaneeweethowãakan, he is happy to speak Welsh whenever possible.
